SOUNDGARDEN Discusses Split In 'Guitar Center Sessions' Premiere
May 5, 2014Reunited grunge legends SOUNDGARDEN were the featured musical act on Sunday night's (May 4) eighth season premiere of DirectTV's Guitar Center Sessions. During the interview portion of the program, the band discussed the reasons for its sudden split in 1997 while the band was still riding a wave of success and acclaim.
Frontman Chris Cornell said: "There wasn't some sort of philosophical conflict. It was more of a day-to-day life becomes less enjoyable. And because of what we'd created, for me there was more of a preservationalist attitude towards it. Like, if this is gonna be icky, then let's just not do it. So up to that point we hadn't made any mistakes with our music or made any mistakes in front of our fans."
Bassist Ben Shepherd added, "And we didn't make any mistakes friendship-wise. We were all still really good friends, so there was no ‘story' when we broke up."
Chris Cornell told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that there was never any juicy story behind their decision to break up. "Nobody really likes the answers they got with why did SOUNDGARDEN break up, because they almost feel like it wasn't tabloid-ish enough," he said. "People seem to want to sort of hear rumors and things that were based on what you normally hear, I guess, which is, you know, 'I hated that guy' or 'that guy hated me' or a specific thing happened one day that was unbelievable or horrible. And, like, none of that existed. We had just been a band, I think, a lot longer than a lot of people knew about."
SOUNDGARDEN reunited in 2010 and released a new studio album, "King Animal", in 2012. The band tentatively plans to work on a new disc later this year for a 2015 release.
The Seattle quartet is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of its fourth album, "Superunknown". Two deluxe reissues of the record will arrive on June 3.
SOUNDGARDEN will head out on a co-headlining tour of North America this summer with NINE INCH NAILS, beginning on July 19 in Las Vegas.
